The MACF has issued a grant of $100,000 to the township to help pay for the new roof that will cost more than $200,000. The rest of the money will come from the township’s Building Maintenance Fund.
The 20,000-square-foot Public Safety and Fire Training Facility is located on Homer Road, about one-half mile south of M-20.
While the building is just 19 years old, Township trustee Brian Van Wert said, “The wind has abused the roof something fierce. The wind is blowing the shingles off.”
That problem has often caused the township to make repairs in the spring. The shingle roof will be replaced by a steel roof which Van Wert hopes will last at least 50 years. Fischer Roofing & Sheet Metal Co. has been hired to do the job. The goal is to have the project completed by the end of July.
“We really appreciate all that the Midland Area Community Foundation has done for us,” Van Wert said.
He added that the facility is used by many organizations for training including MidMichigan Medical Center-EMS, Midland County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police and Midland County Emergency Services. The building also serves as a backup location for Midland County Central Dispatch (911).
